Based on Richard Matheson's "A Stir of Echoes," this 1999 film holds up as one of the great psychological horror movies. After Tom (played masterfully by Kevin Bacon) lets himself get hypnotized at a party, he begins to experience hallucinations. Meanwhile, his five-year-old son, Jake, has an imaginary friend named Samantha. Soon, Tom realizes his visions are also of Samantha.
This movie is extremely well done in terms of Kevin Bacon as the unreliable narrator as well as the special effects. It's probably closer to a thriller than a straight horror movie—think Mystic River (also with Kevin Bacon, see what I did there?) with some supernatural happenings—but it has both tense and creepy moments.
For anyone that hasn't seen this one, I highly recommend it. If you watched it when it first came out, it's definitely worth another viewing.
