Over 50 years after its release, the made-for-television movie, Duel, remains a masterclass in creating tension. Despite having seen the film multiple times and knowing how it ends, this movie stresses me out like few others can.
The combination of cacophonous sound (rumbling engines, air horns, train whistles) and a frantic, unsettling score leave you off balance and anxious. In a film with very little dialogue (none from the truck driver), this audible combination fits perfectly with the cinematography. The shots from each vehicle, the wider angle views of the landscape, and the close-ups of Dennis Weaver are done magnificently. Even in his first film, Spielberg's genius is on display.
Available for rent on Amazon Prime (this version contains the added scenes for the theatrical release in 1972). I give this one an A+ every time.
